For any first-time visitor to Homer, Alaska, the harbor seal is a must-see. The adult seal is about 6 ft. in height and can weigh up to 290 lbs. They are easily recognized by their V-shaped noses. It actually looks much like a cat’s nose. Though most are gray in color, the seals range from brown to tan as well.This/tag helps explain it more.

The harbor seal is not an endangered species. There are an estimated 5-6 million of them across the globe. The seal hunting practices which they were once subject to are now banned in most where the seals reside. The seals were hunted for their thick blubbery skin. Their blubber gives the seals the insulation they need to stay warm in an arctic climate. It carries a high value on the market because of its many applications in industry.

It is recommended to not approach the seals. Though they look cute from a distance, the males can be aggressive with each other, especially during mating season.
